Northern Sustainable Industry
This project will provide a resource person to assist a rural northern economic development group in establishing an outerwear and textile industry based on the use of caribou fur felt.

Strait Talk: A Regional Clear Language Newspaper
This project will produce a clear language regional newspaper that will provide Labrador Straits residents with improved access to information on programs and services provided by all levels of government, as well as local success stories, profiles of local individuals who have made a significant contribution, regional activities and community events.

Labrador Communities Research
This project aims to compile a comprehensive database, analytical reports, and qualitative reports on the community capacities within Labrador. This information will enable communities to address problems with the justice and corrections systems in the region.

Aboriginal Arts and Crafts Organization
This organization will provide Aboriginal artists and craft people with an opportunity to express their concerns over issues that affect them. It will also encourage new artists and craft people to pursue the gift they have, offer guidance and provide information on assistance available to them.

West Prince Telehospice
The West Prince Telehospice will demonstrate how home-based tele-technology can help in the provision of palliative care to residents of the West Prince region in PEI.

Promoting Partnerships to Educate
Through this project, the Prince Edward Island Crime Prevention Association will establish a partnership with the Community Policing Division of the RCMP to disseminate information about crime, its causes and how citizens working together at the community level can reduce crime.

Making History, Building Futures: PEI Women of the Twentieth Century
Making History, Building Futures: PEI Women of the Twentieth Century is a research project that will highlight the accomplishments of Prince Edward Island women in arts, culture, and entertainment in the twentieth century. The material produced will feature the creativity and accomplishments of past and present woman artists and entertainers.

Leadership 2000 - "New Hope"
Leadership 2000 - "New Hope" will provide youth with an opportunity to develop critical leadership skills such as problem solving, communication and risk taking. This will be done through a series of sessions customized to the particular needs of the youth.

Western Malpeque Co-operative Community-based Development Initiative
The Western Malpeque Co-operative Community-based Development Initiative will build greater grassroots participation in community-based development in Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities in the Tyne Valley / Lennox Island area of PEI. It will promote inter-community awareness, interaction, partnership building and co-operation by establishing infrastructure and creating joint economic development opportunities.

Community Use of Basin Head Lagoon
A social/economical study will be done to determine the impact that the "Basin Head Marine Protected Area" project will have on the small rural community of Basin Head. The project will be the first marine protected area on Prince Edward Island and among the first in Canada.

Integration through Theatre for At-Risk Youth
This project places at-risk young offenders with the Tantramar Theatre Society as technicians, box office staff and set construction crew members. The youth will also create their own theatre piece. The project aims to encourage youth to work on a team, while providing a forum for them to express their feelings in a non-destructive way.

Community Genuine Progress Index (GPI) Development
This project will test the Genuine Progress Index (GPI) tool in a small community and explore its potential for widespread use in other communities. The GPI surveys, reports and formulates data on life in the community according to six areas, including family, volunteerism, employment, security, land and agriculture, and ecology.

Mushamush Watershed Management Planning
This project will develop a watershed management plan to bring the community together to restore and conserve the Mushamush River. The project will also develop a generic management planning manual for other community- based groups undertaking similar projects.

Women's Cooperatives: A Local Solution to Women's Economic Needs
Working with 18 women in Pictou County, this project will help participants develop their business skills through a co-operative model of business management. Participants will develop a business plan and further their economic independence.

Library Links
This project will support an outreach coordinator with the Eastern Counties Regional Library, who will teach people how to access library collections outside of their communities through the Internet, using community and school CAP sites.

A Community Vision of Sustainable Forest Resource Management
Local residents and interest groups will create a community and cooperative approach to managing the local forest. Goals include working together to set objectives for the forest, ensuring the future of the forest, as well as sharing knowledge on forest resource issues.

Western Valley Tourism E-Guides
Electronic kiosks at Visitor Information Centres will allow tourists to access tourism information, real-time reservations, e-mail, video and local e-commerce sites. These "e-guides" will provide immediate access to festivals, events, local exhibits, outdoor activities, accommodations and services. Rural communities will be able to attract visitors to their area, using these kiosks as "one-stop" information centres.

The Muir-Cox Shipyard Project
Interpretive displays on the community's ship-building heritage and vessels, and boat restoration demonstrations will take place at the local historic shipyard. This project will provide training to local people, encourage volunteerism and boost the local economy through tourism.

A Clearinghouse for Rural Community Capacity Building:
The Clearinghouse project will connect people, organizations and communities to local knowledge, expertise, resource material and technology. This will enhance their capacity to develop policies, programs and supports for healthy communities in Western Nova Scotia.

Transfer of Local Knowledge into Harvey High School Curriculum
This project aims to transfer community knowledge into the local education system. Using computer graphics, computer-aided design software, spread sheets, wordprocessors and Internet applications as tools for processing local content, students will improve their general computer skills and be better able to apply these skills to other tasks later in life.

Apprenons en famille région Alnwick (Family Learning in the Alnwick Region)
This project aims to increase the literacy level of families living in the Alnwick region through a literacy program which targets children and their parents.

Community Connections and Communications Technology for Youth
Local youth will learn film and video-making and be introduced to computer technology so they can develop Community Channel programs featuring Grand Manan island.

Using Associated Species as Potential Indicators of Environmental Change Related to the Harvest of Rockweed
This project will provide technical information on rockweed, a form of algae, to a working group of federal, provincial and municipal representatives, with the aim of expanding the harvest of this resource in New Brunswick. Information gathered will be used to assess potential impacts of the rockweed harvest on marine habitat, and to determine the harvest level at which significant environmental changes can be measured.

Club Fun-Famille
This project aims to use a simple and inexpensive family literacy approach to help parents participate fully in the preschool education of their children, using resources they find in their home and community environment. Kent County has one of the lowest literacy rates in Canada.

Building a Sustainable Tourism Community, Bouctouche N.B. Best Practice Model
The Bouctouche Watershed stakeholders will establish a practical framework to determine sustainable development benchmarks and apply best practices in green boating, green hoteliery, eco agri-development and other fields. The region will serve as a unique model transferable to other regions and communities in rural Canada.

Integrated management of D'Alembert intramunicipal lots
The municipality of D'Alembert wants to develop a 4,000-hectare community forest area, by adopting a multi-resource approach. It intends to develop mushroom harvesting, wildlife habitats, recreation and tourism, and the experimentation of new methods of forest harvesting.

Establishment of Petites Écores rural cooperative
This project involves the creation of a rural products cooperative and acquisition of the necessary skills for electronic commerce. It is part of a broader agro-tourism initiative focussing on environmental and heritage tourism.

Evaluation of potential of the sea buckthorn in the Matane region
The project aims to determine the potential for growing and processing the Sea Buckthorn in Quebec, particularly in the Matane region. It was chosen by the community following a consultation of community stakeholders.

Saint-Pascal diaspora network
The purpose of the project is to communicate with people born in Saint-Pascal after 1925, who have since left the municipality, and to network them with their community of origin. It should allow many people to participate, either directly or indirectly, in the economic development of Saint-Pascal, through a database of business people interested in participating in the community's development. The project is being organized as part of the 175th anniversary of Saint-Pascal, to be celebrated in 2002.

Development of policy instruments for protecting and developing the rural heritage of the Kamouraska region The project involves the development of tools and services to support rural heritage actions (by individuals, associations, municipalities, etc.), particularly with regard to the region's exceptional built heritage. The project falls within a broader framework of heritage development in the region.

Establishment of a pilot ride-sharing project
This project consists in establishing a single window for passenger transportation in Bellechasse. This will involve integrating existing passenger transportation within the region and promoting certain links between the means of transportation available (car pooling, scheduled ride-sharing, school bus transportation, paratransit, etc.)

Incentives for and barriers to rural self-development
The project is designed to enhance the level of training within the community, particularly with regard to ethical decision-making in the area of sustainable rural development. Offered in partnership with the University of Sherbrooke, this project will give the various community stakeholders the opportunity to receive university-level training through an applied ethics microprogram.

Establishment of a multicriteria participatory approach for basin management
The project concerns the water resources management of the Etchemin River basin and is designed to help managers in their decision-making through a process involving several participants focussing on various issues. A multicriteria participatory approach is proposed, aimed in particular at better integrating the social and environmental concerns of the local public.

Nigasimon drop-in centre
The project is aimed at providing a centralized support system for Native youth so that they can develop their aspirations. A drop-in centre would be established, providing youth with a range of programs and appropriate services in the cultural area. Exchanges with non-Native young people are planned under this project, which will be implemented in Maniwaki.

Traditional skills network
The purpose of the project is to develop products to improve knowledge of history and the cultural heritage of traditional crafts. In particular, it will involve the establishment of a series of demonstrations to inform and entertain visitors to the region, provide employment, generate revenues at the local level, and increase resident awareness of the region's history.

Tourism Itineraries Produced by Young People in Rural Areas
This project will enable high school students in rural Ontario municipalities to acquire practical skills in social sciences and multimedia technology, and to contribute to their communities by producing a Web page for francophone visitors and visitors who have a particular interest in French language and culture. The Web page will profile the cultural and natural attractions of individual rural municipalities in the form of thematic tourism itineraries.

Collaborating Alliance Communities Access
This project will connect 14 non-status Aboriginal communities via a message board on the Internet. The message board will help promote self-sufficiency among these communities by facilitating collaboration in solving problems.

Community Law School – Rural Initiative
This project will provide advocacy skills training in the area of social welfare law to social service agency staff and librarians through travelling training sessions.

Volunteer Youth in the Millennium
This project will encourage rural youth to gain volunteer experience to enrich their communities and further their career opportunities. Targeting the 14 to 25 age group, the project will put youth through training and an orientation program before placing them with rural agencies, local events, fairs and activities.

Rural Enterprise Loan Fund Technical Assistance Program
This project will provide loan applicants with experienced technical assistance in filling out their loan applications in order to start or strengthen their business. Consultants from networks across Ontario will assist the applicants.

Farm Succession Skills Development for Rural Business Professionals
This project will advise farm families about the importance of having a legal will and a succession plan in place. Advisors will work with families in developing a plan and help them set and work towards their goals.

The Farm Line (for farmers, farm families and rural dwellers)
The Farm Line will reach out to farmers and other rural residents who are experiencing social, emotional or financial difficulty, through a farm crises line. This line is based on personal contact and will offer personal, career and financial services, including counselling, information and referral.

First Nation Economic Development Network
A network will be developed among 27 First Nations communities to strengthen economic opportunities. Sessions will be held to teach such things as identifying business opportunities, planning, access to capital and using technology. After each session, people will be required to go back to their community and pass on their knowledge.

Manitoulin Rural Youth Education Project
Youth between the ages of 16 and 24 will work towards completion of high school credits and an Ontario Secondary School Diploma in an innovative and "high-tech" learning environment. Students will learn leadership skills, job search skills and technology skills, while staying in their own communities.

Minoyawin Distributed Homecare Resources Pilot Project:
This project will create a network system that provides training and support for local health care givers in five isolated First Nations. The system will also be accessed through the Internet and video-conference technology in some areas.

Northern Ontario's Online Outreach Initiative:
This project will conduct a series of e-business information sessions to Northwestern Ontario businesses which will build awareness of electronic commerce; answer e-business queries; outlline the benefits of moving online; demonstrate the advantages of a Northern network; and promote new e-commerce tools. This will enable rural businesses to compete in the worldwide "business to business" economy.

Rural Computer Access Training Seminars
This project aims to provide blind and visually-impaired individuals in the west district of Manitoba with training and access to state of the art technology, and to develop skills needed for career training and daily living.

Development of a Regional Vision
The overall goal of this pilot project will be to develop a long-term development plan, taking into account natural resources, the environment, culture, infrastructure and existing services. This community development projet will produce recommendations and proposals on recreational services and tourism, as well as residential, commercial and industrial development.

The Water Watchdog Project
This project will train young people aged seven to 15 in assessing water quality in streams, rivers and lakes.

Getting Your Buffalo
This project will encourage Aboriginal junior high school students to remain in school, by matching youth with Aboriginal professional and tradespeople who can act as role models. It will also initiate discussions of employer-employee responsibilities and higher education options, in the schools.

Carlton Trail Tourism Initiative
This project will support the development of "thematic driving tours", a guide to help other groups develop such tours, and an updated tourism inventory database, to encourage tourism in central Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan First Nations/Computers for Schools Repair Centre
This project will allow Aboriginal students enrolled in computer-training programs to refurbish used computers to Internet-ready status. These computers will then be delivered to schools and families on reserves.

This project aims to rehabilitate the Driftpile River through the building of drinking troughs for nearby cattle pastures, and riparian buffer strips between these pastures and the river's west bank.

Beaver County C-Disk

Jasper Community Outreach Services
This project aims to improve health and social services in Jasper by improving linkages between the agencies providing the services.

Through this project, youth will develop a music and theatre presentation on AIDS/HIV and will perform it at 40 junior and senior high schools in the Mistahia and Peace Health Regions.

Community and Government Services - On Line
This project will develop a web site to make information from all levels of government more accessible to residents of the Peace River region in Northwestern Alberta.

Creating Opportunities for Rural Women
This project will train rural health care professionals, victim services workers and disadvantaged women in social advocacy principles and ethics.

Restorative Justice
This project will promote a restorative justice approach as an alternative to the traditional court-based justice model, to dealing with minor crimes in nine rural communities around Innisfail, Alberta.

Rural Contact Office and Community Liaison
The project is to establish a rural contact office and provide the service of a full-time Community Liaison who would ensure that rural residents have convenient and effective access to programs and resources that support community life in rural Alberta.

Tourism Transition Project - A Community Voice
The Fernie Women's Resource and Drop-In Centre will develop and introduce a planning model to help the community decide on how best to move from a resource-based to a tourism-based community. The group will submit a community-created social and economic development plan to the City of Fernie.

Women and Community Safety in BC
The purpose of this project is to promote the safety of women in rural and isolated communities in BC, by creating awareness and understanding of women's concerns and the implications of these for women's social and economic well-being.

Youth Technology Development Project
This project is designed to assist youth in acquiring the skills, knowledge and training necessary to conduct analysis of the computer technology industry, and use the training gained to help start and develop business opportunities in the industry.

Farmers' Perceptions of their Role in Rural Communities
This project will conduct surveys of farmers throughout British Columbia to examine their roles in rural communities, and their perceptions of sustainable communities. This will yield important information for communities, farmers and policy makers on how farmers and agriculture support local communities, and what causes farmers to choose and adhere to their vocation.

Community of Horsefly: Tourism Plan for Economic Diversification
The main purpose of the Horsefly Tourism Plan is to take an existing economic plan and build upon it to develop new opportunities for business and employment. The secondary purpose of the plan is to cultivate community development and long-term planning through partnerships within the community and the region.

Building Community Health & Strength
This project aims to improve access to health services and information for mid-life women in several northern British Columbia communities. Older women in this area have more health-related problems and a shorter life expectancy than in other areas. The project will identify key health issues, test locally-based solutions, enhance linkages to health services, test Tele-Health approaches, and undertake special measures for marginalized women such as Aboriginals and immigrants.

Marketing Plan Development
This project will develop a five-year marketing plan for the Alberni Valley Heritage Network that will attract 150,000 people in year five, and will help the Network be self-sustainable for funding by the same year. This will strengthen and diversify the economic base in the Alberni Valley, build capacity in the community and provide opportunities for youth through seasonal employment.

Community Economic Development Initiative
This project will lay the foundation for effective community economic development by creating a partnership among economic development organizations through the creation of a common vision, a common communications language, a common planning and operations methodology, and a common will to act in a cooperative way.

Cariboo-Chicoltin Preschool Partnership
This project will implement a child care, early learning, and parental support process for two remote communities in the Cariboo Region. Parents will receive training in the Early Learning Canada program and receive assistance in providing the best learning environment for their pre-schoolers. It is expected that this process could be replicated in other communities in the area.

Comox Valley Links Community Network - Baynes Sound Geo'Net
This project will develop a user-friendly geographical information system on the environment, eco-systems, and community activities within the Baynes Sound area. This will allow citizens to have easy access to a wealth of information on the Sound area in order to plan environmentally sustainable economic development.

Aquaculture Techniques for the Northern Abalone
This project will implement an abalone farming process in the Powell River area on British Columbia's west coast. Wild abalone fishing has been banned for 10 years, so this project will allow the domestic farming, processing, and sale of this valuable seafood. There is significant demand in the Asian market for this product.

A Dogrib Youth Addictions Peer Training Project
The Dogrib Addictions Strategy is a comprehensive approach to addictions problems in four Dogrib communities. The purpose of this project is to train 18 youth as peer counsellors serving in their local communities.

Just Add Water
The project aims to develop basic swimming skills among the children and youth of Yellowknife and N'dilo and provide a recreational opportunity for these youngsters. Most children would not otherwise be able to attend due to the costs associated.

Training Needs Assessment System for Community and Aboriginal Governments
The NWT Association of Municipalities will hold training workshops in the Sahtu, Deh Cho, North Slave, South Slave and Beaufort Delta regions to help northern governments develop an accurate assessment of their current human resource capacity and their training needs.
Funding Approved: $30,000


Gateway Towards Self Empowerment
The Hamlet of Enterprise wishes to attract a greater number of tourists for the area in order to improve its infrastructure and economy, while reducing its dependence upon communities such as Yellowknife, Hay River and Fort Smith. This project aims to train a youth or business entrepreneur to promote the community.

Capacity Building & Skills Development Project
This project aims to help the Dene and Métis of Colville Lake and Fort Good Hope develop the necessary capacities and skills to ensure that their lands are managed in a sustainable and effective manner, for the long-term good of the people.

Human Resource Development Coordinator
This project will establish a Human Resources Coordinator for the community of Lutsel K'e to help Aboriginal people find jobs. With the high unemployment rate of Aboriginal people in Canada in comparison to other groups, this project will be of major benefit for the people who live in this isolated community.

Community Employment Officer
This project will provide an economic officer for the Community of Deline to help make local community members aware of job opportunities throughout the region, and allow them to apply for these opportunities. This officer will also assist residents in filling out government forms, such as benefit forms for seniors.

Youth Business Development Officer
The project will encourage youth to start or expand businesses in the Deh Cho region by increasing awareness of the assistance that is available and helping youth access this assistance. The Virtual Classroom Project will establish an online education program. It will allow students to attend courses in a virtual classroom, where they can interact with the teacher on a daily basis. Courses delivered can include math, English, languages, science , social sciences, northern studies, and career and technology studies.

The Inuvik Community Garden Project
The Community Gardening Society of Inuvik has converted a decommissioned arena into a community greenhouse which will extend the growing season of numerous plants and vegetables, ensure a successful harvest and allow production of a greater variety of fresh produce. Greenhouse officials also plan to study the effect of longer summer hours on crops. The greenhouse will be the most northerly greenhouse in Canada and will serve as an effective model for other northern communities.

SahtuNet-a Sahtu Community Web Portal
An Internet portal will help unite the communities of Deliné, Fort Good Hope, Norman Wells, Colville Lake and Tulita, and offer residents the opportunity to join the electronic global village and reap the rewards that experience can offer. The portal will contain original content created specifically by and for the Aboriginal population, as well as important links to other Aboriginal sites, government and education sites of interest to the general public, youth, elected officials, business and municipal government employees.

This project will improve the quality of life for people with physical and visual impairments living in the Yukon Territory. A local case manager will be hired to provide counselling and referral services, help clients access information and develop their knowledge of the Internet and other related technologies. The case manager will also provide community support and education regarding the needs and abilities of people with physical and visual impairments.

Rural Community Development and World Heritage
A core planning committee will explore ways to promote understanding of the economic benefits of Kluane National Park's ecological integrity , and it's World Heritage designation. The Health of Nunavut Website will educate Nunavut residents about the health and social services issues experienced by Inuit persons and the programs and projects that address these issues. Tools for Community Building
This project will develop the skills and capacities of people working in community and volunteer organizations. It will provide opportunities to build informal learning networks within and between communities. Videoconferencing, Education and Community Development: A Demonstration Project
This project will use video-conference technology to enhance communications for the community of Igloolik. It will connect the community to the Canadian Museum of Nature and possibly other locations for a series of cross-cultural public and school programs.

Netsilik Miniature Collection
The project will develop a miniature collection of traditional products, designed and used by Inuit for both survival and recreation.
