Farm product groups interested in setting up promotion and research agencies funded by levies can use the same legislation that enabled the beef industry to set up its agency.
First they must develop a proposal for an agency and establish that it has sufficient support among producers.
The Farm Products Agencies Act then sets out a clear process.
- The farm product group provides the National Farm Products Council with the proposal to set up the agency.
- The NFPC holds public hearings to determine whether the agency proposal has both merit and industry support.
- The NFPC recommends to the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food whether the agency should be established.
