DIAND is the short name for the Government of Canada's Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. DIAND works to make Canada a better place for First Nations, Inuit and Northerners.
First Nation(s): A term that is a more respectable replacement for the word "Indian", which some people find offensive. Sometimes it is used to replace the word "band" in the name of a community.
Inuit: Inuit are the Aboriginal people of Arctic Canada who live primarily in the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and northern parts of Labrador and Quebec. The word "Inuit" means "the people" in Inuktitut.
Northerner(s): Is a person or persons living in one of the three northern Canadian territories of Northwest Territories, Nunavut, or Yukon.
DIAND supports First Nations and Inuit in developing healthy, sustainable
communities and in achieving their economic and social goals. DIAND
also works with land claims, self-government agreements, political
evolution, managing natural resources, and protecting the environment.
