Why a Centre for Sustainable Community Development?

The SFU Centre for Sustainable Community Development (CSCD) works to support and enable the sustainable development of communities through research, education, and community mobilization in B.C., Canada, and internationally.

Education: The CSCD offers an undergraduate certificate and post-baccalaureate diploma (also available through distance education), graduate study, and a non-credit professional program designed for those already working in the field. Education is also delivered through publications, events, workshops, our website, and through project-specific programs.

Research: The CSCD is committed to developing practical, effective solutions for environmental, social and economic challenges, and possesses a unique understanding and approach to support businesses and communities in their transition to sustainability. Research is conducted by Centre faculty and staff, graduate and undergraduate students, and associates.

Community Mobilization: The Centre's approach to sustainable community development is based upon a "community capital" framework (Roseland 2005 ) that has community mobilization at its heart. All of its education and research programs are thus community- and project-oriented; it also engages in a variety of outreach and technical assistance activities.

Founded in 1989 as the Community Economic Development Centre, in 2004 the Centre changed its name to the Centre for Sustainable Community Development. We think this new name better reflects what we have always been about: integrating economic, social and environmental objectives in community development. It also reflects one of our core approaches to CED: community enterprises must be financially sustainable if they are to contribute effectively to community development.
