The total consumption of lentils in Mexico moved from 27.9 thousand tons on 1990 to 34.7 thousand tons on 2001, what represented an annual average growth rate of 2.2%.
The average per capita consumption of lentils in Mexico is approximately 350 grams.

Mexico does not export significant quantities of lentils. During 2001 its total exports to the world amounted 125 metric tons with a value of 93 thousand US$.
On the other hand, Mexican imports of lentils have been growing. During the period 1990-2001, they showed an annual average growth rate of 13.6% (according to volume), moving from 7.7 thousand metric tons with a value of 3.2 million US$ to 31.1 thousand metric tons with a value of 9.4 million US$.

Canada supplies about 98% of the total Mexican imports of lentils and the rest is supplied by the United States. It is important to remark that Canadian lentils have a duty free access into the Mexican market.
