NEWS ON CANADIAN EVENTS

The Fisheries Council of Canada held its 60th Annual General Meeting in Montreal, Canada in late September. John Connelly, President of the National Fisheries Institute spoke on five main issues facing the industry: contaminants, aquaculture, trade, access to resources, and economic integrity. Chris Lischewski, President/CEO, Connors Bros. presented the facts on methyl mercury and how risk tolerances known as “reference doses” were established at highly conservative levels. He went on to describe how Connors Bros has become a global brand leader in shelf stable protein. Alastair O’Reilly, Managing Director of the Canadian Centre for Fisheries Innovation made a comprehensive presentation on the growth of the Chinese seafood processing industry and discussed its implications for Canadian seafood processors. Dr. Arthur May, President Emeritus of Memorial University provided a thought-provoking report on management of straddling fish stocks in the Northwest Atlantic. The Canadian Fishing Company introduces Wild Salmon Oil Omega-3 Capsules

The Barry Group recently concluded a purchase and sale agreement to acquire the assets of the former North Atlantic Sea Farms Ltd. The operation consists of a salmon hatchery and aquaculture operations in the pristine waters of Pool's Cove and Bay d'Espoir/Gaultois Passage areas, and a fish processing plant in St. Alban's. Current production is approximately 3,000 tons of head-on-gutted (HOG) Atlantic salmon per year, with the potential to more than double production.
