Freshwater fisheries
Global
- Worldwide, at least 20% of the 10 000 freshwater fish species are now endangered, threatened with extinction, or are already extinct.
- Inland fisheries and aquaculture capture is very important for the sector. It accounted for 23.3 million tonnes in 1996, which increased to 31.2 million tonnes in 2001, an increase of 34% over the period amounting to almost 5 times the growth rate for all types of fisheries. (Total fish production from all sources amounted to 120.2 million tonnes in 1996 and increased to 128.8 million tonnes in 2001, an increase of 7%.)
