NEW!  Better determination of time to frostbite

For forecast or observed wind chill, click here

Welcome to our Wind Chill Web site. Here, you will find information on wind chill and our program. For forecast or current values of wind chill in your locality, consult our Weatheroffice site, where you will find the current and forecast values when these are high enough to be a concern.

Please feel free to navigate this site by clicking on the buttons to the left. Here's what you'll find:

Calculator: This page gives you access to an on-line calculator to know the value of wind chill for a given wind speed and temperature. It also gives you access to an easy-to-use downloadable program to do the same calculation.

Fact Sheet: This is our main information document on wind chill - what it is, how it affects you, our program, etc. It also gives information on cold injuries and what to do to prevent them, and on some interesting facts about wind chill in Canada, as well as to a little quiz to test your knowledge of wind chill.

Charts and Tables: Here you'll find charts and tables to easily determine the wind chill values - and even determine your own wind chill! - as well as a table giving minutes to frostbite under various conditions of wind and temperatures, and charts about wind chill hazards and Canadian records. This page also gives access to a table of suggested values for converting from the old system to the new one, implemented in 2001.

History: We tell you why we changed our wind chill program, and what we did to change it, including some results from a survey on wind chill that we conducted in 1999, and a personal account from a participant in actual wind chill tests conducted in June 2001 at Defence R&D; Canada - Toronto (formerly the Defence and Civil Institute of Environmental Medicine).

Educational Documents: Through this link you'll be able to download copies of our wind chill poster and wallet card to have at home or give to your friends.

Science - Equations: Here you'll find the actual equation for calculating wind chill and how it was developed.

Partners - Links: The new wind chill program could not have come to life without the participation of several partners - organizations and individuals - to which we express our gratitude. This page introduces them to you and also gives you access to other Web sites related to wind chill.
