CANADIAN RURAL PARTNERSHIP
Rural Innovation Summit
Portage la Prairie, Manitoba
June 6-7, 2002
The Rural Innovation Summit will give Canadians from rural and remote communities an opportunity to provide their perspective on the Government of Canada's Innovation Strategy. It is one of a series of meetings the Government of Canada is hosting throughout the country in 2002, to assist in the development of its Innovation strategy.
The Innovation strategy is outlined in two papers, "Achieving Excellence: Investing in People, Knowledge and Opportunity" (http://innovation.gc.ca/gol/innovation/interface.nsf/vSSGBasic/in04142e.htm) led by Industry Canada and "Knowledge Matters: Skills and Learning for Canadians" (http://www11.sdc.gc.ca/sl-ca/doc/report.shtml) led by Human Resources Development Canada.
Consultations on the Innovation strategy will include regional summits, meetings with industry representatives, youth summits and other activities. These will culminate in a National Innovation Summit in Toronto in November 2002.
At the recent National Rural Conference held in Charlottetown, Industry Minister Allan Rock announced that the National Rural Innovation Summit would be held June 7 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. The Rural Secretariat is coordinating this meeting, the only summit to focus exclusively on the rural and remote perspective.
