MINISTERS PETERSON AND MITCHELL TO TRAVEL TO GENEVA, SWITZERLAND
International Trade Minister Jim Peterson and Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Andy
Mitchell will travel to Geneva, Switzerland, to participate in a meeting of more than 20
World Trade Organization (WTO) ministers from November 8 to 9, 2005.
The ministers will seek to promote Canada’s objectives in a vital round of talks in order
to advance all areas of the Doha Development Agenda. These talks will take place as
WTO members prepare for the Sixth WTO Ministerial Conference in Hong Kong in
December 2005.
“The next week will be a critical time for the Doha Development Round—by the end of
the week, we will know if there will be a straight road to Hong Kong, or if negotiations
will face even more obstacles,” said Minister Peterson. “Canada will remain firm in
ensuring an outcome that is in the best interest of Canadians.”
“The Government of Canada will continue to seek a level international playing field so
that all producers are able to compete and trade fairly, while ensuring prosperity for
Canadian producers and their families,” said Minister Mitchell.
