Nutrients and Their Impact on the Canadian Environment Nutrients are chemical substances that provide nourishment and promote growth of micro-organisms and vegetation. This report meets the commitment made by the Government of Canada to determine the extent to which nutrients derived from human activities may be impairing Canadian environments, contributing to quality-of-life concerns for Canadians, or endangering their health. The report focuses in particular on the cycles of nitrogen and phosphorus.

Nutrients in the Canadian Environment: Reporting on the State of Canada's Environment This state of the environment (SOE) report is a companion volume to the federal science assessment entitled Nutrients and Their Impact on the Canadian Environment. The report looks at how the Canadian environment is being affected by nitrogen and phosphorus compounds that are released as a result of human activities. It describes the mechanisms by which nutrients affect the environment, assesses their impact on the environment, especially through enrichment, and their potential for future damage, and outlines the major sources of these compounds.
