| Major Trends / Competitors Evident | The pet food market in Chile is an interesting niche area that has
been growing steadily over the past few years. It has increased in
size by 45% since 1999. Canada is currently ranked as the 4th
market for imports into Chile, however, our market share has fallen
in 2001 from 7.6% to 3.1%. Argentina has captured approximately 62%
of the market, the US 21% and Brazil 13%. The pet food market is an interesting niche opportunity for Canadian producers as we have excellent capabilities as well as the advantages of the free-trade agreement. This is a sector that Canadian companies should specifically target on price-terms as compared to the U.S. alternatives. With the moratorium imposed on Argentine beef as a result of the outbreak of foot and mouth disease, there lies an opportunity for Canadian exporters to capture some of their market. |
| Major Importers | Due to the diversity of the number of different brands being imported,
the distribution channels for pet food in Chile are also quite varied.
In 2001, there were 19 major importers and 6 that imported over $US
1 million. Currently, Effem, Nestle, Café do Brazil, Ralston Purina, and Pet Market are the main importers who distribute to supermarkets etc. |
| Major Brands in the Market | The pet food market in Chile is very competitive with many different brands present. In 2001, there were 93 different imported brands to Chile, with 25 having imports valued at $US 100,000 and 9 valued at greater that $US 1 million. Major international brands such as Pedigree, Friskies, Whiskas Eukanuba and Champion are all present in the Chilean market. |
| Canadian Brands in the Market | Canada is well positioned in the Pet Food market and has a substantial amount of brands that present. | Special Remarks | There have been some recent difficulties with sanitary approval due to the outbreak of various health concerns (foot and mouth, mad cow etc.) For example, pet food is subject to a sanitary certificate from Canada and currently lamb-base pet food from Canada is not allowed due to the fact that Canada is not free of Scrapie. |
