MINISTER STRAHL ANNOUNCES $118,000 FOR THE CANADIAN FARM ANIMAL GENETIC RESOURCES FOUNDATION

OTTAWA, Ontario, December 1, 2006 – The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board, today announced $118,000 in funding to develop and implement strategies for conserving the diversity of Canada’s livestock.

Funding for this initiative is provided to the Canadian Farm Animal Genetic Resources Foundation under Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Advancing Canadian Agriculture and Agri-Food (ACAAF) Program.

"Canada’s New Government is committed to conserving the genetic diversity of Canada’s livestock," said Minister Strahl. "Funding this project will enhance the livestock industry’s competitive position, and enable it to supply our Canadian and international consumers with the quality and selection of meat products that they demand."

A cooperative effort between the Foundation and its members, Canadian universities and the Centre for Animal Genetic Resources in Saskatoon, the project will put in place new animal reproductive techniques to help conserve the variety of Canadian livestock in the future.

"Animal genetic resources are recognized today as vital in maintaining and enhancing the competitiveness of Canadian agriculture on domestic and international markets," said Dr. Stephen Moore, Chair of the Foundation. "Through the work of the Canadian Farm Animal Genetic Resources Foundation, more and more producers and scientists will realize how essential this work is to the future of animal reproductive technologies."

The Foundation, a registered, not-for-profit, charitable organization, was established in 1996 to support the conservation of farm animal genetic resources in Canada. Members of the Foundation include farmers, scientists, breed associations and commodity organizations.
