Trade and Development
While trade is not a panacea for all the challenges faced by developing
countries, trade can be a valuable tool for development. It can
play an important role in generating economic activity, building
healthy economies and alleviating poverty.
There are many connections between Canada’s trade and development
strategies. In multilateral and regional trade negotiations, Canada
supports taking into account disparities in participating countries'
size and level of economic development. Canada is also working to
devise new trade rules that take into account the interests of developing
countries.
Canada extends trade-related technical assistance and capacity
building to help developing countries participate in various trade
negotiations, facilitate their implementation of trade agreements
and better enable them to adjust and diversify their economies.
In addition, Canada offers generous market access programs and liberal
rules of origin to facilitate imports from developing countries
and least-developed countries.
Our engagement toward addressing the challenges faced by developing
countries is also in line with Canada’s various international
commitments, such as the United
Nations Millennium Development Goals and the Monterrey
Consensus on Financing for Development.
