Shelterbelt Component

Shelterbelt Component Objective

The Greencover Canada Shelterbelt Component encourages the adoption of beneficial management practices to plant trees and shrubs on agricultural land. Trees and shrubs are a natural part of the agricultural landscape. Shelterbelts provide wind erosion control, snow trapping, micro climate enhancement, wildlife habitat as well as aesthetic value.

What kinds of beneficial management practices are eligible?

Applicants may benefit from financial assistance for establishing shelterbelts including:

  • site preparation;
  • planting ;
  • weed control;
  • temporary fencing to prevent livestock damage;
  • tree materials.

Who can participate?

Producers who have a completed and reviewed environmental farm plan or equivalent agri-environmental plan are eligible to apply for financial and technical assistance through the National Farm Stewardship Program to implement beneficial management practices identified in their environmental farm plan.

What financial assistance is available?

Approved applicants are eligible for a maximum of $30,000 in federal funding over the life of the National Farm Stewardship Program. Funding levels and criteria vary from province to province.
