![]() Watershed Evaluation of BMPs (WEBs)Abstract
The development and promotion of beneficial management practices (BMPs) remains one of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's (AAFC) cornerstone commitments to producers and the Canadian agriculture sector. AAFC's Greencover Canada Program includes a Technical Assistance component that focuses on providing farmers with information about various BMPs to help accelerate their adoption. At the same time, Greencover's Critical Areas component was designed with BMPs in mind to help improve the health and function of riparian areas in order to protect habitat and retain water quality. Funded primarily by Greencover, the Watershed Evaluation of BMPs (WEBs) project is a $5.65 million AAFC-led initiative that seeks to quantify at a micro-watershed scale (about 300 hectares in size), the relative environmental and economic effects of selected BMPs on water quality. Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC), a key project partner, is contributing $1.25 million of the total cash funding. Studies will be conducted from 2004-2008 on seven micro-watershed sites across Canada. The WEBs watersheds may also be the focus of compatible watershed studies conducted by other government and non-government agencies, some of which will directly participate in WEBs studies EPB. WEBs Watershed Locations Across CanadaThe seven regional WEBs watershed sites are located in areas of historical benchmarking, where long-term background conditions and trends at the watershed level are well understood. The watersheds selected for the WEBs study include:
