Food Safety Initiative ComponentThe Food Safety Initiative is the third component of the Canadian Food Safety and Quality Program and expands on the Systems Development and On-Farm Implementation Components. Systems Development provides national industry associations with funding to develop food safety, food quality and traceability systems. On-Farm Implementation helps producers' access tools to implement food safety systems on their farms. The Food Safety Initiative is geared towards regional or provincial initiatives in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Nova Scotia. Under their Agriculture Policy Framework (APF) Implementation Agreements, these participating provinces have allocated a portion of their federal APF funding to the Food Safety Initiative. Other provinces may choose to reallocate APF funding to this initiative as well. The initial focus of the Food Safety Initiative will be to increase the number of non-federally registered food processing plants moving towards and/or having Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) and/or ISO 22000 food safety systems in place. Activities will be directed at the processing industry that advances food safety awareness, knowledge development and implementation of food process control systems.
