The Agri-Food Policy Framework - International

How to Apply

If your organization has a new proposal for consideration, please contact the CAFI Program representative in your region. See national secretariat and regional office contacts for addresses and telephone numbers.

A CAFI project officer will provide you with more information, and will discuss your plans with you. If your proposal appears to meet the eligibility requirements, the project officer will give you a formal application form, or you may [download the application] here. When you submit this form, you begin the application process.

The CAFI Program processes requests for funding under the long-term international strategies category once a year (the deadline is usually in January). Short-term projects are considered three times per year, usually in February, June, and September.

(Application form to be added when updated)

Eligibility Requirements

Who can participate?

Broad-based sectoral and commodity-based organizations and associations in the Canadian agriculture, agri-food, and seafood sectors are welcome to submit proposals. If your organization is an industry association or alliance, or is a technical-marketing support organization, and is national in nature, you may be eligible for funding. Only legal entities able to enter into binding contracts in Canada can participate.

You can submit an application for:

  • long-term international strategies to gain recognition and facilitate long-term sustainable export success; or
  • projects to address short-term needs related to new-market constraints or growth opportunities.

Departmental representatives will rate applications based on a range of criteria, including how proposals align with the Agriculture Policy Framework, the potential for export growth, the association's ability to implement the activities, and the degree to which proposals demonstrate appropriate risk-sharing between industry and government. The CAFI program is committed to reporting on results for Canadians, as such a sound performance measurement framework to measure and assess results is also required. For an example of results measured, see our menu of performance indicators.
