Malachite green (MG) has been used around the world extensively for the treatment of
external fungal and parasitic infections on fish eggs, fish and shellfish and is an
effective fungicide, especially as a general hatchery disinfectant. Leucomalachite green (LMG)
is a metabolite of MG and is persistently found in fish tissues long after MG may no
longer be detected.
The substance is not approved by Health Canada for use in food, however it can be
readily purchased for treatment of ornamental (aquarium) fish.
