Fertilizers

This section of the CFIA web site is maintained by the Fertilizer Section of the Plant Production Division. It is designed to provide information on the regulation and registration of fertilizer and supplement products. As part of the regulation and registration process, the CFIA monitors regulated products and product labels through random inspections at blending plants, manufacturing plants, processing plants, retail outlets and warehouses. The CFIA also monitors releases of proposed new products for research purposes, and verifies that products registered under the Import for Export Program are handled in accordance with requirements.  CFIA routinely samples fertilizers, fertilizer-pesticides and supplements to verify that products meet CFIA standards for safety. The samples are tested for contaminants including heavy metals, pesticides and pathogens such as salmonella.

CFIA activities include:

  • registration of fertilizers, fertilizers/pesticides, and supplements;
  • review of product safety, efficacy, and labelling;
  • monitoring for active ingredients and contaminants in the market place;
  • administering the Canadian Fertilizer Quality Assurance Program (CFQAP);
  • inspection and enforcement
