In 1868 - one year after Confederation - the federal government created the Department of Agriculture. Upgrading the older Bureau of Agriculture to department status recognized the importance of agriculture to the economic, social and cultural development of Canada.
Over the years, many Ministers have held the agriculture portfolio. Under their guidance, the Department has developed innovative policies and practices that have helped our agriculture and agri-food sector become one of Canada's leading industries.
