Our Mandate: Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada provides information, research and technology, and policies and programs to achieve security of the food system, health of the environment and innovation for growth.

Summary

The Minister of Agriculture and Agri-food is responsible for all matters relating to agriculture. This includes supporting agricultural productivity and trade, stabilizing farm incomes, encouraging research and development, and being responsible for the inspection and regulation of animals and plant-life forms. The Minister has been assigned responsibility for coordinating rural development and enhancing the quality of rural life.

In addition to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has other organizations within his portfolio. Please see the links on the right hand side of the page for more information.

The heads of each of these portfolio agencies are responsible for providing advice and guidance to the Minister. This includes issues related to food inspection, plant protection and animal health, the financing of farm operations, milk quotas and dairy subsidies, the overall grain handling system and associated standards, and the marketing of farm products.
