Animals > Biohazard Containment Containment Standards for Laboratories, Animal Facilities and Post Mortem Rooms Handling Prion Disease AgentsThe Biohazard Containment and Safety Unit is pleased to release the first edition of the Containment Standards for Laboratories, Animal Facilities and Post Mortem Rooms Handling Prion Disease Agents. These standards replace the TSE Biosafety Guidelines for Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories and describe appropriate biocontainment measures for facilities handling known positive material. Compliance with these standards will be a condition of import for prion disease agents. Design features and operational practices for diagnostic laboratories are described briefly in the introduction. Facilities handling imported animal pathogens other than TSEs must continue to refer to the Containment Standards for Veterinary Facilities, as additional requirements may be necessary. A pathogen safety data sheet is also available with additional information specific to the bovine spongiform encephalopathy agent, see PSDS for BSE agent. The following checklists are intended to assist TSE laboratories, animal facilities and post mortem rooms in determining their compliance with the Containment Standards for Laboratories, Animal Facilities and Post Mortem Rooms Handling Prion Disease Agents. These checklists can be used in conjunction with the Containment Standards for Laboratories, Animal Facilities and Post Mortem Rooms Handling Prion Disease Agents as well as the Containment Standards for Veterinary Facilities. |
