Biosafety Standards and Policies

The Biohazard Containment and Safety (BCS) Unit is responsible for the development and publication of Containment Standards for Veterinary Facilities. This document outlines the minimum design, physical and operational requirements for Canadian laboratories and animal facilities that import and work with animal or zoonotic pathogens (including most pathogens of foodborne diseases). Laboratories who apply to import animal or zoonotic pathogens must demonstrate that they meet these requirements before the BCS Unit can issue an import permit. The document also provides detailed criteria for the verification of critical containment components. The first edition, published in 1996, has become recognized nationally and internationally as a model standard for facilities working with strictly animal pathogens or with large animal containment.

The following checklists are intended to assist containment level 3 laboratories, animal facilities and post mortem rooms in determining their compliance with the Containment Standards for Veterinary Facilities and can be in conjunction with the Containment Standards for Veterinary Facilities.
