Plant Protection and Seed Potato Certification


The CFIA’s Plant Health laboratory services are delivered by three Centres of Expertise and the CFIA Laboratory in St. John’s, NF. Each laboratory serves as the national centre for its area of specialization, providing testing, technology development, scientific advice, and consulting support to CFIA’s Program and Policy officers, and to international organizations.

bullet CFIA Laboratory - Sidney, British Columbia
(Centre for Plant Health)

Provides testing, virus indexing, therapy, and technology development for viruses and pests of grapevines, treefruits and other crops.

Ontario Plant Laboratories - Ottawa, Ontario

Provides detection and identification of insects, mites, terrestrial molluscs, nematodes, fungi, bacteria and viruses to certify plants, plant products and plant growing media for import, export, domestic surveillance and control of regulated plant pests.  Provides testing and identification of plants with novel traits, of seed lots for adventitious presence of GMOs, and plant cultivar identification and verification.  Conducts research to develop sensitive, rapid and robust diagnostic tests for plant pests of concern and plant cultivars.

 

bullet CFIA Laboratory - Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
(Centre for Animal and Plant Health)
  • Centre of Expertise for Potato Diseases

Provides testing, and reference services for CFIA’s Seed Potato Certification program. Activities include research to improve tests for potato diseases of quarantine and trade significance. Also provides audit and technical support for the accreditation of non-federal labs to test seed potatoes for import, export and disease control programs.

 

bullet CFIA Laboratory - St. John's, Newfoundland
(Plant Health Laboratory)

Provides testing for potato wart disease and cyst nematodes; collaborates with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Newfoundland government in the development of potato cultivars resistant to potato wart and potato cyst nematodes.
