Retailer Letter - Deadline for Compliance

Attention: Retail Establishments

Subject: Deadline for compliance with the Food and Drug Regulations regarding nutrition labelling, nutrient content claims and diet-related health claims

The following is intended to provide clarification regarding the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)’s compliance and enforcement strategy with respect to the deadline for compliance with Canada’s mandatory nutrition labelling requirements.

With respect to foods not manufactured by the retailer, please note that the CFIA will initially focus inspection efforts where the food is manufactured or imported as opposed to foods on retail shelves that were purchased by the retailer before the end of the transition period. This is outlined in our Compliance and Enforcement Strategy as well as the Questions and Answers regarding nutrition labelling on the CFIA’s website. As always, actions may also be possible at any level in the distribution chain if circumstances warrant, such as consumer or industry complaints or health and safety concerns.

Please contact your local CFIA office should you require any other information respecting the above.
