Subject: Feedback requested on Clarifying the Labelling Guidelines for Method of Production Claims on Meat, Poultry and Fish Products Discussion Paper

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is proposing Guidelines and policy to clarify the labelling and advertising of meat, poultry and fish products that carry method of production claims.

The discussion paper, Clarifying the Labelling Guidelines for Method of Production Claims on Meat, Poultry and Fish Products, which is available at www.inspection.gc.ca/english/fssa/labeti/inform/20041221dise.shtml, contains information on the background, international positions and details of the following:

  • claims relating to the “humane treatment” or “living conditions” of an animal or fish from which a product is derived;
  • “no animal products”, “no animal by-products”, “no animal fat–no animal meal”, “no bone meal–no animal fat”, “no animal fat”, “no bone meal” and “no animal meal” claims;
  • claims for “grain fed” and “milk fed”;
  • the current guidelines for making a “raised without the use of antibiotics” claim;
  • claims regarding the absence of hormones.

The CFIA invites you to comment on the discussion paper by April 1, 2005. The development and direction of the proposal may be influenced by the comments received.
