Invasive Alien Species
Invasive Alien Species (IAS) are plants, animals and micro-organisms that spread beyond
their natural range into new locations. They have the potential to cause extensive
economic hardship and environmental damage. Examples of IAS include purple loosestrife,
zebra mussel, Brown Spruce Long-horned Beetle, and Asian long-horned beetle.
IAS may be introduced by human activity (international trade, travel, migration), or by
natural means such as flight or wind. IAS do not respect political boundaries. They can
originate from other continents, neighbouring countries, or different ecosystems within
Canada.
Preventing and managing invasive species will strengthen Canadas long-term
competitiveness, protect its natural environment, and contribute to the well-being of its
citizens.
