RESEARCH FARM TO GET "GREEN" ELECTRICITY
CHARLOTTETOWN, Prince Edward Island, October 17, 2006 - The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board, today announced that Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) is installing a wind turbine on its Harrington research farm property to generate "green" electricity for three of its buildings and welcomed the greening of electricity production on the Harrington farm.
"Canada's New Government is committed to protecting the environment," said Minister Strahl. "This project further demonstrates how we are leading by example."
The pilot project is in keeping with the direction of Canada's New Government in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and developing renewable sources of energy.
Construction on the $200,000 project is expected to begin this fall. The 30-metre-high tower with three turbine blades will generate between 50 and 60 kilowatts of electricity, up to half of the farm's electricity requirements. The electricity will be fed into the Maritime Electric power grid.
Wind power is recognized as one of the most cost-effective technologies for renewable electricity production available today. Electricity from wind power is pollution-free and greenhouse-friendly.
Through the Agricultural Policy Framework, AAFC is working with its provincial, territorial and industry partners to promote sound farm stewardship practices which contribute to a clean and healthy environment for all Canadians.
