Information, technology and research programs help the Canadian poultry
industry remain competitive on the national and international markets,
and provide the consumer with a safety and quality of food that is produced
in a sustainable and environmentally friendly production system.
On the national level, there are 19 agricultural research centres in
Canada with 619 professionals, including scientists, working on 345 different
research projects. The total yearly budget set aside for these activities
across the country is more than $250 million. The research centres focusing
mainly on poultry are located in Summerland, British Columbia, Charlottetown,
Prince Edward Island, Truro, Nova Scotia and Guelph, Ontario.
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s research efforts are combined
with the Matching Investment Initiative (MII). Through this program, the
Department matches the amount contributed by the private sector in collaborative
research to meet the needs of the marketplace. For the year 2001-02, federal
funding for this program totalled $27 million.
Numerous poultry research efforts are also being made at the provincial
and academic levels. Whether conducted by provincial agriculture departments
or under joint research programs (universities, breeders’ associations
and provincial governments), the purpose of these combined efforts is
the same, namely to have an agriculture and agri-food sector that is on
the leading edge of technology.
In 2002, an interesting change occurred when the Chicken Farmers of
Canada, the Canadian Egg Marketing Agency, the Canadian Turkey Marketing
Agency, the Canadian Broiler Hatching Egg Marketing Agency and the Canadian
Poultry and Egg Processors Council came together to establish the Canadian
Poultry Research Council (CPRC). The mandate of this organization is to
create and be involved in various poultry research and development projects
in Canada.
Canadian poultry research priorities are primarily focused on food safety
and quality, animal health and well-being, environmental friendliness,
and development of new technologies and/or products.
In this section you will find various links for provincial, national
and international research that can hopefully answer your questions. Have
fun researching!
