Biosecurity Checklist

Measures to help prevent the introduction and spread of avian influenza on your farm

VISITORS

Check Box Maintain a visitor log
  • Include date, name, business, contact information, farm visits within the past 24 hours and next farm visit
Check Box Secure farm entrance with a locked gate
Check Box Ensure parking site is at least 30 metres away from poultry houses
Check Box Provide clean clothing and footwear for all visitors (including hair coverings)
Check Box Require all visitors to wash their hands before entering poultry houses
Check Box Lock doors to poultry barns when farm staff are not working

POULTRY AND DOMESTIC WATERFOWL

Check Box Implement a program to regularly monitor the health of the flock
Check Box Follow a strict schedule when caring for the flock (the CFIA recommends youngest flocks to oldest flocks)
Check Box Isolate new birds from existing flocks
Check Box Seal poultry house attics and cover ventilation openings with screens
Check Box Prevent exposure of birds, bird feed and water to wild birds and outside animals
Check Box Prevent contact of outdoor-raised birds (waterfowl, free-range birds) with wild birds by means of fencing and netting
Check Box Remove or control vegetation growth in the vicinity of poultry houses
Check Box Drain ponds and bodies of standing water close to poultry houses
Check Box Purchase all birds and feed from reputable suppliers that maintain strict biosecurity controls

SANITATION

Check Box Power-wash all vehicles and equipment with detergent and disinfect on a hard, dry surface such as a concrete panel before entering the premises
Check Box Routinely clean footwear thoroughly with detergent and disinfectant when entering and leaving each poultry barn
Check Box Change all foot baths at least daily, and more frequently in high-traffic areas
Check Box Ensure thorough cleaning and disinfection for all cages transporting birds
