Newsroom > News Releases / Information Bulletins CANADA WILL CONTINUE TO WORK WITH THE UNITED STATES TO MINIMIZE RESTRICTIONS ON QUEBEC AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTSOTTAWA, August 16, 2006 - In response to a confirmation by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) of Golden Nematode, a species of Potato Cyst Nematode, on a farm east of Montréal, Quebec, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has implemented temporary restrictions on certain products from the Province of Quebec. "Given the unique trading relationship that exists between our two countries, we are disappointed that these temporary restrictions have been implemented despite our best efforts to obtain a more regionalized approach," said the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. "We will continue to work closely with our American counterparts with a view to further reducing their regionalized measures and minimize trade disruptions as quickly as possible." The CFIA will work closely with industry to facilitate compliance with the requirements identified by the United States (U.S.). The Agency will continue to work closely with the Government of Quebec, other provinces, the territories and industry as we address this issue. In accordance with international scientific protocols, the CFIA continues to investigate the records of production at the farm and perform intensive root and soil sampling around the affected property and any associated parcels of land. American officials have been invited to participate in this investigation of Golden Nematode in Quebec. This is a common practice between our countries. The CFIA is currently involved in the investigation in Idaho regarding a recent confirmation of Potato Cyst Nematode in April. Information will be posted to the CFIA's Web site (www.inspection.gc.ca) as it becomes available. -30- For information: Canadian Food Inspection Agency |
