Court Fines Chris's Meats & Delicatessen Ltd. $6,000 for contravening the Food and Drugs Act and the Meat Inspection Act

On May 2nd 2006, in Provincial Court, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Chris's Meats & Delicatessen Ltd. a Dartmouth, Nova Scotia based meat processing company, also carrying on business as Chris Brothers Meats and Delicatessen, entered guilty pleas to one count of contravening subsection 5 (1) of the Food and Drugs Act and one count of contravening subsection 5(a) of the Meat Inspection Act. The offences occurred on or about December 20, 2004.

The Court sentenced the accused to $ 6000 in fines.

Sub-section 5 (1) of the Food and Drugs Act states:

No person shall label, package, treat, process, sell or advertise any food in a manner that is false, misleading or deceptive or is likely to create an erroneous impression regarding its character, value, quantity, composition, merit or

Subsection 5(a) of the Meat Inspection Act states :

No person shall, unless authorized by the regulations, apply or use the meat inspection legend.
