VIOLATING THE HEALTH OF ANIMALS ACT COSTLY TO A PROFESSIONAL APIARIST

Mr. Ernest Leopold Fuhr of Fort St. John, British Columbia (B.C.), was convicted on April 27, 2006 in provincial court on one count of violating Section16(1) of the Health of Animals Act.

On May 24, 2006, Mr. Fuhr was imposed a fine of $20,000 for failing to present animals (honeybees) imported into Canada to an inspector or customs officer for inspection.

At the time of the offence in April 2003, the Honeybee Importation Prohibition Regulations 1999, prohibited the importation of any honeybees into Canada or any Canadian port from the US, except from the State of Hawaii, during the period beginning on the date of the coming into force of these Regulations and ending on December 31, 2004.

The CFIA is responsible for enforcing a variety of federal legislation, including the Health of Animals Act and its regulations. It protects consumers by contributing to food safety, the protection of plants, and the health of animals in Canada.
