Ontario Company Fined $4,000 for an Offence Under the Food and Drugs Act

A conviction was registered against Quality Natural Foods Ltd. in Provincial Court in Toronto on June 5, 2006, resulting in a fine of $4,000. The fine was due to a guilty plea to one count of violating Section 5.(1) of the Food and Drugs Act.

In June 2004, inspectors from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency obtained samples of Quality brand "Sesame Seed Oil" that had been offered for sale by Quality Natural Foods Ltd. The product’s ingredient list only listed sesame seed oil. However, laboratory analysis determined that it contained in excess of 10% vegetable oil.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency enforces the Food and Drugs Act as it relates to food. The Act protects consumers from false, misleading or deceptive food labels of packaging.
