Pioneer Grain Company Fined $2,000 for Violating the Seeds Act

On Jan. 14, 2004, Pioneer Grain Company Limited plead guilty in the Saskatchewan Provincial Court at Broadview to one count of violating the Seeds Act. The court fined the defendant $2,000.

Between March 26, 2001 and May 22, 2001, the Pioneer Elevator in Whitewood Saskatchewan sold certified seed without being registered as a bulk storage facility in accordance with the Seeds Act. Under the Act, all establishments that sell bulk pedigreed seed must be licensed to do so.

The Seeds Act and Regulations help to provide Canadians with a supply of quality seed and to prevent fraud in Canada and internationally.

Quality assurance is the cornerstone of Canada’s seed certification system. If substandard seed is sold, the public could lose confidence in the certification system, undermining the integrity and reputation of Canada’s seed industry.
