Sammy Hong's Holdings Receives $7,500 Fine for Violating the Food and Drugs Act

On May 19, 2004, Sammy Hong’s Holdings Ltd. (doing business as Sammy’s Food Market) entered a guilty plea in Victoria Provincial Court to two counts of violating the Food and Drugs Act and was fined at total of $7,500.

On Dec. 11, 2003, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency conducted an inspection of Sammy’s Food Market in Victoria after receiving a consumer complaint.

The company was fined $2,500 for mis-labelling pork chops by placing a new "Best Before" sticker over the old "Best Before" label. The company was also fined $5,000 for selling pork spareribs which were thawed and had been previously frozen, without displaying a "Previously Frozen" sticker on the package. The Food and Drugs Act prohibits these kinds of activities.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency takes food safety very seriously and believes safe food and consumer protection are essential to the health of Canadians.
