Vancouver Importer Fined For Possession of Plums From China

On July 22, 2004, Sol Produce Imports Ltd. entered a guilty plea in Vancouver Provincial Court to one count of violating the Plant Protection Act. The company was subsequently fined $5,000.

On July 30, 2003, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) visited Sol Produce Import’s warehouse in Vancouver, B.C. Upon inspection, the CFIA found and detained 29 cartons of plums that had been imported from China.

Under the Act, no person is allowed to bring in any thing that is or could be infested with a pest. The plums, which are not allowed into Canada from China, were subsequently destroyed by CFIA.

The plant health program of the CFIA helps to protect Canada’s plant resource base against the introduction and spread of regulated pest and diseases. The agency is working to prevent the spread of the Oriental fruit moth, which could affect B.C.’s fruit growing regions.
