ALLERGY ALERT

UNDECLARED SOY PROTEIN IN GASPESIEN BRAND HAM TOURNEDOS AND JARDINIÈRE HAM TOURNEDOS

OTTAWA, February 18, 2004 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Les Cuisines Gaspésienne Ltée are warning people with allergies to soy protein not to consume Gaspesien Brand Ham Tournedos and Jardinière Ham Tournedos. The affected products contain soy protein which is not declared on the label. This alert is of concern to those individuals who have allergies to soy protein.

The following products are affected by this alert:

1. Gaspesien Brand Ham Tournedos, sold in a 250 g package bearing UPC 0 68553 00003 8 and establishment legend CANADA 498. Only products bearing a best before date of 08MR04, 09MR04, 20MR04, 26MR04, 29MR04, 05AL04 and 10AL04 are affected.

2. Gaspesien Brand Jardinière Ham Tournedos, sold in a 250 g package bearing UPC 0 68553 00004 5 and establishment legend CANADA 498. Only product bearing a best before date of 13MR04 is affected.

The manufacturer, Les Cuisines Gaspésienne Ltée., Matane, Quebec, is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. These products have been distributed in Quebec.

Consumption of these products may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction in persons with allergies to soy protein. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
