HEALTH HAZARD ALERT

ADDITIONAL HONEY PRODUCTS MAY CONTAIN NITROFURANS

OTTAWA, April 8, 2004 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume additional honey products described below because these products may contain nitrofurans.

Nitrofurans are antimicrobial drugs which are banned for use in Canada in food producing animals. Consumption of foods contaminated with nitrofurans may pose a human health risk related to the inherent toxicity of the drug and the potential to cause allergies. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

The current list of products affected by the Health Hazard Alerts can be viewed below.

The CFIA is continuing its investigation in cooperation with the various companies to identify and recall the affected products from the marketplace.

The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

The previous alert and a complete up to date list of affected products can be viewed at: http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/corpaffr/recarapp/2004/20040406e.shtml.
