HEALTH HAZARD ALERT

GREEN MERAJ PISTACHIOS MAY BE CONTAMINATED WITH AFLATOXIN

OTTAWA, April 8, 2004 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning consumers not to consume Green Meraj pistachios described below as they may be contaminated with aflatoxin which may cause illness if consumed.

The affected product, Green Meraj shelled plain pistachios, packaged in 10 kg boxes may have been sold in bulk at various retail stores in British Columbia. Consumers who bought bulk pistachios after February 20, 2004 should inquire at the place of purchase to verify if the store received the affected product.

The importer, Global Traders Ltd., Burnaby, British Columbia, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The product has been distributed in British Columbia.

Aflatoxins are a group of toxic compounds produced by certain strains of fungi. Aflatoxin is listed as a human carcinogen. Consumption of products containing aflatoxin can lead to serious health consequences including liver damage and possibly death. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
