HEALTH HAZARD ALERT

FERGUSONS MAPLE SYRUP MAY BE CONTAMINATED WITH LEAD

OTTAWA, May 7, 2004 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume Fergusons Maple Syrup as it may be contaminated with high levels of lead.

The affected Pure maple syrup, Product of Canada, has a sticker identifying it as CANADA NO. 1 MEDIUM and is packaged in 250 mL and 500 mL maple leaf shaped glass containers and 1 L plastic containers bearing the following identification sticker:

The manufacturer is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. This maple syrup is known to have been sold from the farm gate. The label does not bear any code.

Continued exposure to high levels of lead can cause damage to the central nervous system, kidneys, and blood. Children are particularly at risk.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
