HEALTH HAZARD ALERT

JOHN STRICKLER MAPLE SYRUP MAY BE CONTAMINATED WITH LEAD

OTTAWA, May 21, 2004 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Mr. John Strickler are warning the public not to consume John Strickler Maple Syrup as it may be contaminated with high levels of lead.

The affected product, Canadian Pure Maple Syrup, has a round sticker identifying it as CANADA NO. 1 MEDIUM, or CANADA NO. 2 AMBER ONTARIO, and is packaged in 1 L, 2 L, and 4 L tin containers bearing the following identification sticker:

DUNCHURCH, ONTARIO
P0A 1G0

The producer is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. This maple syrup is known to have been sold from the farm gate.

Continued exposure to high levels of lead can cause damage to the central nervous system, kidneys, and blood. Children are particularly at risk.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
