ALLERGY ALERT

UNDECLARED SULPHITES IN GOLDEN SWALLOW BRIDGE BRAND BATATATIS RHIZOMA

OTTAWA, July 8, 2004 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning people with sensitivities to sulphites not to consume the Golden Swallow Bridge brand Batatatis Rhizoma product described below. The affected product may contain sulphites which are not declared on the label. This alert is of concern to those individuals who have sensitivities to sulphites.

The affected product, Golden Swallow Bridge brand Batatatis Rhizoma, is a sweet potato - dried yam product made in China. It is sold in a 170 g plastic film package bearing UPC 7 67038 61929 0.

The importer is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The affected product is known to have been distributed in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.

Consumption of this product may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction in persons with sensitivities to sulphites. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
