ALLERGY ALERT

UNDECLARED MILK IN MASSA SOVADA SWEET BREAD

OTTAWA, July 13, 2004 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Dundas Portuguese Bakery Ltd. are warning people with allergies to milk protein not to consume the Massa Sovada Sweet Bread described below. The affected product contains milk which is not declared on the label. This alert is of concern to those individuals who have allergies to milk.

The affected product, Massa Sovada Sweet Bread, is sold in 20 oz (567 g) and 34 oz (964 g) size loaves in clear plastic bags. There are no Best Before date codes on this product.

The manufacturer, Dundas Portuguese Bakery Ltd., Toronto, Ontario, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The affected product has been distributed in Ontario.

Consumption of this product may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction in persons with allergies to milk protein. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
