ALLERGY ALERT UPDATE

UNDECLARED WHEAT IN CERTAIN PRODUCTS MADE BY MOMO’S VEGGIE KITCHEN LIMITED

OTTAWA, November 2, 2004 - An update to previously issued allergy alerts (2004-10-15, 2004-10-05, 2004-09-17) is provided below. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Momo’s Veggie Kitchen Limited are warning people with allergies to wheat not to consume certain products made by MoMo’s Veggie Kitchen Limited. The affected products may contain wheat which is not declared on the label. This alert is of concern to those individuals who have allergies to wheat or have sensitivities to gluten.

All products, except Mo’Joes Veggie Ground Beef, have been found to contain high levels of gluten. All products, except Mo’Joes Veggie Ground Beef, which do not declare the presence of gluten are affected by this alert. The affected products are listed below. This list contains Veggie Slices which was not previously recalled.

2. Mo’Steak Veggie Steak
3. Veggie Drummettes with Sweet and Sour Sauce
4. Veggie Drummettes with Cajun Sauce
5. Vegetarian Nuggets with Honey Mustard Sauce
6. Vegetarian Nuggets with Barbeque Sauce
7. Mo’Beef Veggie Burger
8. Mo’Chicken Veggie Burger
9. Mo’Rainbow Veggie Fish
10. Mariner’s Veggie Delight

The manufacturer, MoMo’s Veggie Kitchen Limited, Richmond, British Columbia, is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The affected products have been distributed across Canada.

Consumption of these products may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction in persons with allergies to wheat. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
