UPDATE - HEALTH HAZARD ALERT

PROLIMER CAPRICE DES MERS SMOKED SALMON WITH CREAM CHEESE AND CRAB FLAVORED POLLOCK MAY CONTAIN DANGEROUS BACTERIA

OTTAWA, December 6, 2004 - The public warning issued on December 4, 2004 has been expanded to include additional information on product distribution. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Aliments Prolimer Inc. are warning the public not to consume Prolimer Caprice des mers Smoked Salmon with Cream Cheese and Crab Flavored Pollock because the product may be contaminated with the bacteria responsible for botulism, a foodborne illness in humans.

The affected product, Prolimer Caprice des mers Smoked Salmon with Cream Cheese and Crab Flavored Pollock, is sold in a 130 g package bearing UPC 0 57087 02395 8 and Best Before Dates 04DE30 and 05JA13.

The manufacturer, Aliments Prolimer Inc., Ville Vanier, Quebec, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The affected product is known to have been distributed in Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick, and may have been distributed to other provinces.

Botulism is a life-threatening illness caused by the build-up of toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Food contaminated with C. botulinum may not look or smell spoiled. The product should not be consumed by humans or animals. There has been no botulism illness associated with the consumption of this product.

The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
