Lester’s Deli Fined for Illegally Transporting Meat Products

On June 3, 2005, Lester’s Deli was fined $2,000 in provincial court for illegally shipping meat products from their establishment in Montreal destined to a supermarket in Surrey, B.C.

On two separate occasions in 2002, Canadian Food Inspection Agency inspectors discovered pallets of meat product from a provincial establishment in Montreal that was destined for shipment to B.C. The boxes of smoked turkey breast, corned beef, beef brisket, salami and pickled beef tongue were prepared by Lester’s processing establishment, which is not a federally approved facility.

According to the Meat Inspection Act, meat products can only be distributed interprovincially if they originate from a federally registered establishment.
