HEALTH HAZARD ALERTCROSSE & BLACKWELL WORCESTERSHIRE SAUCE CONTAINS SUDAN IOTTAWA, February 18, 2005 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning consumers not to consume Crosse & Blackwell Worcestershire Sauce described below. This product contains a non-permitted colour, Sudan I, which is considered to be carcinogenic. The affected product, Crosse & Blackwell Worcestershire Sauce, is sold in a 150 mL size container bearing UPC 0 55000 05564 2. All lot codes starting with L3, L4 and L5 are affected by this alert. The label indicates that this product was imported by Nestlé Canada Inc. This product, imported from the United Kingdom by the current importer Smucker Foods of Canada Co., was distributed nationally. The importer is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. Sudan I, a red dye, is not permitted as a food colour in Canada. It has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals and these findings could also be significant for human health. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
