HEALTH HAZARD ALERT

CERTAIN FOOD PRODUCTS IMPORTED FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM MAY CONTAIN SUDAN I DYE

Related Alerts

OTTAWA, February 18, 2005 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume certain food products identified at the website listed below. These products are being recalled in the United Kingdom (UK) due to contamination with Sudan I, a non-permitted dye, which is a potential carcinogen. Some of these food products may have been imported into Canada from the UK.

The Food Standards Agency in the UK has issued a list of affected food products which can be found at: http://www.food.gov.uk/safereating/chemsafe/sudani/sudan_one/.

This advisory applies only to products manufactured in the UK. Products manufactured in other countries are not affected by this advisory.

The CFIA is conducting an investigation to identify all of the Canadian importers of these products.

Sudan I, a red dye, is not permitted as a food colour in Canada. It has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals and these findings could also be significant for human health. The UK authorities are advising that at the levels present, the risk is likely to be very small and there is no risk of immediate ill health. Health Canada concurs with the UK assessment.

A batch of chilli powder containing Sudan I was used to manufacture Worcestershire sauce. This sauce was then used as an ingredient in the above list of foods.

These products may have been distributed nationally.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products. This release will be updated as more information is available.

For more information, consumers and industry can call the CFIA at 1-800-442-2342. 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. local time - Monday to Friday.
